Treaty 6 flag raised at Wolf Creek Public Schools

There was remembrance, joy, song and dance on Thursday as the Treaty 6 flag was raised at the head offices of Wolf Creek Public Schools.

The move is becoming a common one among school divisions in Alberta who seek to make strides in the name of reconciliation and the calls to action of the Truth and Reconcilation Commission.

“Our board of trustees felt it very important to take the time to acknowledge the Treaty 6 land that we live on,” said Jayson Lovell, Superintendent of Schools. “When we as a school division think about ways we can bring attention to the importance of treaty and truth and reconciliation, this ceremony really was a formal way for us to do that.”

There are approximately 7400 students in Wolf Creek Public Schools, 460 of which identify as First Nations, Lovell added. He noted plans for the flag were in the works for at least three months.

Among other local Indigenous leaders who were on hand at the ceremony was Chief Leonard StandingontheRoad of Montana First Nation.

He said with so much having come to light regarding residential schools, it’s important to ensure all students are educated about the First Nations way of life.

“It’s a long process. Right now they’re in the process of changing the curriculum, learning the history of the natives, and how they were treated. It’s always been a secret,” said StandingontheRoad. “Now everything’s being revealed. We don’t want to be confrontational because that never works. That’s why the treaties were made — for us to cope together.”

Treaty 6 was signed in the late summer of 1876 between the Canadian Crown and a number of First Nations in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

New this year in Wolf Creek Public Schools is a First Nations coordinator and the division has ramped up its professional development in this area. There are also three elders who regularly go around to schools.

The Metis flag is also on display inside the division’s offices.
