Council approves $1.22 million at mid-year budget review

Red Deer city council approved an additional $1.22 million in expenditures at its mid-year budget review on Wednesday.

Items invested in include the realignment of Waskasoo Creek to protect water infrastructure, and parking lot improvements in the downtown core.

“Mid-year budget gives us an opportunity to provide city council with a strategic and financial update for the organization as a whole as well as to bring forward any issues, projects or initiatives that need to be heard prior to capital and operating budget discussions,” said City Manager Craig Curtis.

Infrastructure in Waskasoo Creek — specifically pipes which service the Clearview Service Station — were exposed during flooding this spring, prompting the million dollar fix there.

The review also included a report to council on the additional ten RCMP officers approved as part of the 2018 Operating Budget.

“We know crime prevention and community safety is a priority for citizens in our community and it certainly remains a priority for city council,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “Council will continue to monitor and allocate resources as necessary to reduce crime in our city. Thanks to the ten additional RCMP members and recent proactive enforcement initiatives, we are seeing positive results with reductions in property crime.”

As rdnewsNOW reported last week, just one of those ten officers has actually come on board since hiring began in June.

“We are always looking for efficiencies and more sustainable ways of doing business,” added Curtis. “The items approved by city council today were only considered in response to an immediate need or an emerging opportunity that will continue to make Red Deer a safe and desirable community.”

Funding approved at mid-year budget review comes from reserves and there is no anticipated impact on taxes.

2019 capital and operating budget debates take place this November and January.
