Road safety key as students head back to school

Aug 29, 2018 | 8:00 AM

With kids heading back to the classroom in the coming days, motorists are reminded to slow down and heed the rules of the road.

Ford of Canada, along with Alberta Transportation, the RCMP and Public Safety Canada are providing the following safety tips so that everyone can stay safe this school year.

Sharing the road with pedestrians

-Children on the road can easily be distracted, and they are near the roadways while on recess or lunch, so drive slowly.
-The text can wait. Drivers must be vigilant and alert behind the wheel.
-Don’t block crosswalks when stopped at a red light as it could force pedestrians into the path of moving traffic when they try to get around you.
-Take extra care around playgrounds and parks.

Sharing the road with school buses

-Alternating flashing yellow or amber lights mean a bus is slowing down to stop.
-Flashing red lights mean the bus is stopped.
-It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus in rural areas, while drivers may pass a school bus within Red Deer city limits. Red Deer school divisions utilize ‘safety zones.’
-If following behind a school bus, stay back further than if you were behind another car. The area three metres around a school bus is the most dangerous for children.

Dos and don’ts of dropping off

-Don’t double park as it blocks visibility for other children and vehicles.
-Don’t load or unload children across the street from the school.
-Don’t idle vehicles.
-Do try to carpool to reduce traffic

“It is important to have these tips top-of-mind as we transition out of summer,” says Sean Bell, General Manager, Cam Clark Ford. “We are looking forward to a successful and safe school year ahead.”

Orientations and classes at Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools begin Aug. 30 in Red Deer, Sylvan Lake and Blackfalds and on Sept. 4 in Olds, Rocky Mountain House and Innisfail. St.Patrick’s Community School has already resumed.
