Clearwater County passes first reading in cannabis amendments

Clearwater County Council has given first reading to amend the county’s land use bylaw to allow for the sale of cannabis.

The amendments include four definitions relating to cannabis retail sales and production, and add regulations on retail stores and production facilities in highway development districts, Nordegg service commercial districts and hamlet commercial districts.

County administration looked at regulations that the province and neighboring municipalities implemented and decided to follow suite in most areas.

The amendments state that all retail stores must be 100 metres from provincial health care facilities, schools, parcel of land designated as school reserves, other cannabis retail stores and recreational facilities including playgrounds.
