Pride Week drag show to draw largest ever audience

You probably won’t see a more fabulous show in Red Deer this year.

The Central Alberta Pride Drag Show & Dance goes Saturday night at the Sheraton and will be the largest in the event’s history with close to 800 tickets sold as of Friday morning.

This year’s edition features headliner Derrick Barry, a Las Vegas Britney Spears impersonator and former contestant on America’s Got Talent and RuPaul’s Drag Race.

“It’s for anyone and everyone, as long as you’re 18 years old. It’s a big fabulous show with a lot of music, a lot of dancing, and it’s highly entertaining,” says Serge Gingras, Chair of Central Alberta Pride Society. “For Red Deer, this is a massive event.”

Local performer Sparkle Emotion is now going on nine years as a drag performer.

“I really like people to know that it’s not that we want to be a woman, but we’re celebrating women,” he says. “We’re trying to bring that character to life and really taking those influences we have and bringing them to life.”

It gives one a huge boost of self-confidence, he adds.

Saturday’s big show will also feature Kelli Eletrix, Ruby Harte, Visa De’Klein, DD Fierce and drag king Duke Carson.

Tickets are still available online and a limited number will be available at the door.

While the drag show does signal the intended end of Central Alberta Pride Week, there are a few more events to check off before the festivities are complete.

Friday night, Carnival Cinemas is hosting Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival from 7-10 p.m. On Saturday, Discover Pride is happening from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Discovery Canyon.

Then on Sunday is the postponed Fruit Float, which was originally scheduled for last Sunday. The float down the Red Deer River begins at 11 a.m. from Fort Normandeau. Organizers say if it is postponed again for weather or water-level related reasons, watch for it to be rescheduled in the near future.
