Child Advocacy Centre to benefit from ‘Battle of Alberta’

Aug 7, 2018 | 9:56 AM

A star-studded list of former and current hockey players are uniting in Red Deer this week in support of the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre.

Those with ties to the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers, as well as a few others, are participating in the first ever Battle of Alberta Golf Tournament at Red Deer Golf and Country Club on August 8.

Action gets underway tonight (Tuesday) with a reception and celebrity auction at the Sheraton where teams registered in the tournament will bid on their favourite player to join their team on the links Wednesday.

Following the golf tournament, it’s back to the Sheraton where an After Party and Hot Stove will take place. The evening will also include a live auction all in support of the CACAC.

“Supporters of the centre have worked tirelessly since the formation of the coalition group who were determined to help with the desperate need for child advocacy in Central Alberta. We are collectively changing the way Central Alberta responds to child abuse,” says CEO Mark Jones.

The Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre describes itself as a not-for-profit organization, governed by a board of directors that works in partnership with the Central Region Child and Family Services, Alberta Health Services, Alberta Justice, Alberta Education, the Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre, and the RCMP to better service children, youth and families impacted by sexual abuse and the most serious/complex cases of physical abuse and neglect.

Professionals work onsite to deal with the criminal aspects of each case, as well as child protection and the medical and psychological needs of child victims and their families.

Players slated to be at the event include Lanny McDonald, Theo Fleury, Mike Smith, Glen Sather, Grant Fuhr and Marty McSorley, just to name a few. Brent Sutter will also be involved as a player from Team Canada.

Tickets for Wednesday night’s Hot Stove event are still available.
