Notre Dame, St. Joseph celebrating grad this weekend

Jun 29, 2018 | 5:00 AM

Both École Secondaire Notre Dame High School and St. Joseph High School in Red Deer will celebrate their graduation classes of 2018 on Saturday, June 30.

Students from Notre Dame will have their cap and gown grad ceremonies held at the Enmax Centrium from 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Following that, Graduation Dessert Night will run from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. also at the Centrium.

As for St. Joseph students, the school’s first ever graduation ceremony will take place at the school itself, starting at 11:00 a.m. with the banquet to follow at the Sheraton Hotel starting at 6:00 p.m.

Speaking on the Big Breakfast Show Tuesday morning, St. Joseph Valedictorians Jaeyoung Lim and Alexandra Mitra admitted it’s been a hard year for them but good for the most part.

“It was a year of many firsts at St. Joseph because new school and all, just a lot of new things,” says Lim . “After graduation, I plan to attend the U of A this fall and eventually go into pharmacy.”

Mitra, who will be joining Lim in the U of A Pharmacy program, says what stood out for her during her grade 12 year was the hip surgery she went through.

“It kind of made things harder for me. I was kind of crippled for two months.”

In his upcoming Valedictorian speech on Satudary, Lim plans to encourage his peers to embark on new journeys and tackle them with a smile.

“Congratulations guys, we survived high school.”

Meanwhile, Notre Dame Valedictorian Taylor Kusk told the Big Breakfast Show Thursday morning she’s still working on the finishing touches of her speech to her fellow grads.

“I have to admit, I may have made a joke about being blonde cause that has come up,” she says.

However, looking back, Kusk loves how much fun the grad class has had over the past ten months.

“It wasn’t so heavy,” she explains. “Now, people are thinking about the future and stuff but we still had tonnes of fun together, so it’s been a really enjoyable grade 12 year.”

Following graduation, Kusk will attend the University of Calgary this fall to take engineering and possibly pursue a degree in medicine after that.

“I really enjoy math and science but I also love creation and love English when we get to make projects and things,” she explains. “So I figured engineering would kind of combine both of my interests. I would get to use my mathematical skills while still exercising my creative side as well.”

While also finding time to play softball, Kusk admits balance is the key.

“There is a lot of people I’m sure that don’t necessarily have that much of a balance and I think it’s really important to keep active in sports and making sure you’re still having time with your friends and family,” she exclaims. “Any extracurricular activities like volunteering, anything like that, I think that’s honestly what enabled me to still study hard cause if all I did was studying, I think I would have burned out a long time ago.”

“I definitely want to thank my family, my parents specifically,” says Kusk. “They’ve always been there for me and all my friends, they’ve really supported me. For my advice, I would say ‘Take a leap of faith guys. Honestly, you’re never going to be sure about your future but everything will work out and everything happens for a reason, so just go for it.’”
