Local Lions clubs took some time this month to celebrate 80 years of service to central Albertans.

On June 2, the Innisfail, Lacombe and Red Deer Central Lions Clubs gathered for a special luncheon at the Pidherney Centre in Red Deer to mark the major milestone.

All three clubs were chartered by the Edmonton Host Lions in 1938 and since then have contributed greatly to the communities they serve.

In 2017 while Canada celebrated its 150th birthday, all three clubs commemorated the occasion with community projects.

Innisfail’s centennial project saw the Lions Club install a ‘zip cruze’ at the large toboggan hill in Rasberry Park which was added to the area in 2015.

In Lacombe, in partnership with The City, a fountain was installed in Cranna Lake in addition to a large rock being placed on the shore with a plaque designating the project as a Lacombe Lions Fountain.

In Red Deer, the Lions centennial project addressed one of the goals of the International Lions organization, supporting youth.

The Lions Club donated $50,000 to Red Deer City Soccer Association to be the title sponsor of both the new and older soccer pitches at Westerner Park’s Agricentre.

As a result, the community now boasts the biggest non-boarded soccer fields in the province with each field prominently displaying the Lions Club Logo at centerfield.

Roughly 4,000 local soccer players now enjoy playing on top-notch indoor fields along with youth rugby, lacrosse and ball teams thanks to the Lions Club of Red Deer.
