“I’m a big supporter of the Women of Excellence event and I’m a strong supporter of women and love to mentor younger women to make sure that they’re going in a direction that they want to do and they can show their very best,” Mulder exclaims. “So an honour obviously, very honoured to be part of a group and because the categories are so varied and so comprehensive, it is wonderful to sit next to somebody in fitness and athletics, along with community building because they’re certainly related and so it was an awesome experience.”

Mulder adds that her focus in life now that she’s retired is community building, such as getting on more boards (currently four) and doing more community activities like volunteering at the Hospice.

“I always say that I’ve held a lot of titles in my time here,” explains Mulder. “I was Vice President at the College, I’ve been Deans, I’ve been Chairs but I think the title that I most love is Community Builder. Community Builder is the title I used when I ran for Council and that’s what I certainly see that I have an ability to do.”

As for Marshall, she says she’s been busy trying to get to know as many of the other Women of Excellence nominees as possible.

“We’ve been very busy with the Forum, which is the business that we run in Red Deer,” says Marshall. “Just getting on to more events, Vantage Community Services is one of them, so we’re getting ready for that one that we do a lot of entertainment sponsorship for with our area lists. It’s been really exciting and really busy getting ready for the event and getting out there.”

In addition, raffle tickets are also currently on sale for a reclaimed wooden entertainment centre hand-made by Bridget Allen, a 15-year-old grade 9 student at Lindsay Thurber High School in Red Deer.

Mulder points out that the wood used in that entertainment centre is from fallen trees in the June 20 wind storm last year.

“That’s the good news about that,” states Mulder. “They took those trees and they’ve recycled them if you like and made them into useful things for our community. Tickets are one for five dollars and three for $10 dollars, so you gotta go for the three.”

She concludes, “I think it’s really good for younger women in our community to see that they are honoured.”
