CAREERexpo 2018 at RDC welcomes 4,000 students

A record number of high school students attended the eighth annual CAREERexpo at Red Deer College on Thursday.

Close to 4,000 students from around the region met with potential employers and learned about a myriad of traditional and new educational opportunities.

“One of the things that defines this new type of institution we’re becoming is all about the hands-on types of programs kids can get engaged in, and technology is infused in almost every discipline now,” said RDC President and CEO Joel Ward. “Students are going to get a chance to see they can build, create and innovate with all kinds of new job prospects.”

Ward said the event is mostly about promoting the jobs of tomorrow, rathen than those of yesterday.

Andy Neigel, President and CEO with Careers-the Next Generation – one of the event’s presenters – added, “Being a heavy equipment technician isn’t about pulling wrenches and getting greasy so much anymore. It’s about hooking that laptop up and doing a diagnostic on a complete power system.”

Whether it’s trades, engineering or renewable energy, technology is the name of the game, he continued.

“We see this as an opportunity to further engage kids in high school and say ‘Did you ever think of this or did you ever think of that’ because it’s not just what we grew up with.”

The event began eight years ago at the Westerner with just 400 students in attendance.
