Province looks to give local food industry a boost

EDMONTON- The Notley government has introduced new legislation it hopes will boost the local food industry.

The Supporting Alberta’s Local Food Sector Act would see the establishment of a Local Food Council that would look at growing the industry.

It would also see a new Alberta Local Food Week held during the third week of August.

Agriculture Minister Oneil Carlier was asked how this event would not get lost in the blizzard of events that happen in the summer.

“I think teaming it up with Open Farm Days is going to be a great concept. I think holding it a week prior to Open Farm days is going to help both. It’s going to be a good combination and I think we’re able to raise that at a time of year when people are looking for something new to do.”

Carlier was asked how the province would define local food.

“If you grow it, produce it, make it in Alberta, then we’re going to consider it local. You might have a really good recipe for mango chutney that you sell at the farmer’s market. We don’t grow a lot of mango in Alberta, but we would still consider that local.”

He is hoping this will have a big economic impact.

“We’ve seen in the past 10 years or so, the whole local food scene expand, you know, almost double. I think if we can continue maintaining that consumer confidence in what they want, there’s a lot of opportunities to buy different kinds of foods, obviously, in Alberta. There is a growing segment of the population that wants something different. They identify themselves as a foodie.”
