City council looks to public to identify police priorities

Mar 19, 2018 | 3:45 PM

City council wants your input on what should be at the top of the Red Deer RCMP’s priority list.

Residents are invited to take a short online survey between now and April 6 at RedDeer.ca. The survey will help council shape the objectives and goals of the Annual Policing Plan.

In addition, a phone survey will be taking place until April 6, with a random sample of landline and cellphone numbers throughout the city.

“This is an important opportunity for council to learn more about what our citizens are concerned about from a community safety and policing perspective, and to better understand where we need to focus our safety and enforcement  efforts,” said Mayor Tara Veer.

“The surveys will provide us with valuable information to assist council with our decision making on behalf of our community. Engaging in meaningful conversations is critical when addressing complex issues like safety and policing.”

Councillor Dianne Wyntjes added that city council should be practicing what it preaches when it comes to civic engagement.

“Council has a very good sense of what we believe the priorities are, but it’s important for us to do that check-in with the community and reaffirm that,” she said.

If citizens can’t contribute to either the online or phone survey, they can provide feedback on April 7 when city council and other staff are at Parkland Mall for the annual Let’s Talk event.

Let’s Talk runs 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
