Pink Shirt Day promotes standing up to bullying

Feb 27, 2018 | 8:38 AM

Pink Shirt Day is taking Wednesday to take a stance against bullying in communities, schools and workplaces.

Pink Shirt Day started 11 years ago when two grade 12 students at a Nova Scotia high school stood up for a younger student on the first day of school. The younger boy was called homophobic slurs for wearing a pink shirt.

Locally, Red Deer Public Schools, Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, and Red Deer College are all taking part on Wednesday. École la Prairie is marking the occasion on Tuesday the 27th.

The Alberta government is also supporting the anti-bullying initiative on Wednesday as Minister of Community and Social Services Irfan Sabir will be wearing a pink shirt.

“I am proud to work with our community partners in supporting Pink Shirt Day,” Sabir says. “Albertans who wear pink demonstrate that we will not stand by. We will stand up against bullying and make our communities safer for everyone. We all benefit when we embrace diversity, welcome differences and promote understanding.”

All Albertans are encouraged to participate by sharing pink shirt photos on social media with the hashtag #PinkShirtDay.

The Government of Alberta offers a 24-hour bullying helpline which can be accessed by calling 1-888-456-2323. You can also find help online at Alberta.ca/bullying.
