Charges have been laid against a Bentley man following an investigation into property crimes in the area.

On January 25, Sylvan Lake RCMP arrested 24-year-old Jesse David Haarstad on numerous outstanding arrest warrants.

During the arrest, officers discovered that Haarstad was in possession of a key for a stolen vehicle that was parked near his residence. Investigators obtained a search warrant for Haarstad’s Bentley residence and recovered stolen mail, stolen identity documents, firearms and other property believed to be stolen.

As a result, Haarstad has been charged with several offenses including possession of stolen property over $5000, six counts of possession of stolen property under $5000, four counts of illegal possession of a firearm and careless storage of a firearm.

Haarstad is also charged with four counts of fraudulent possession of identity documents, two counts of fraudulently possessing credit card data, two counts of illegal possession of mail, one count of illegal possession of a forged document and one count of breaching a release condition.

“Targeted enforcement of known offenders is a key part of our crime reduction strategy,” says Staff Sergeant Andrew Shepherd, Sylvan Lake RCMP detachment commander. “Anyone with information on people involved in these crimes is encouraged to share that information with police and help us ensure our communities are safe and secure.”

The investigation is continuing and further charges are expected.

Haarstad has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to make his next court appearance on February 5 in Red Deer Provincial Court.
