Salvation Army hosting reconciliation pow-wow at Pine Lake

Sep 8, 2017 | 4:17 PM

The journey to reconciliation continues this weekend with a first of its kind event happening near Pine Lake.

The Salvation Army and Indigenous Pathways are partnering to host a public pow-wow and celebration of culture at the Salvation Army’s Pine Lake Camp on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

Major Shari Russell, the Territorial Indigenous Ministries Consultant with the Salvation Army, says the event is in recognition of the Sally Ann’s public affirmation of call to action 48 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The call to action invokes the use of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous people as a framework for reconciliation.

“One of the pieces of that is education for our clergy and for our people,” says Russell. “This weekend is a piece of that, so we have some sessions where they can learn and also just building some of those bridges into the community.”

Russell says the Salvation Army has had a very positive relationship with Indigenous communities, but that doesn’t mean they should stop trying to improve.

Salvation Army and Indigenous community members from across Canada will be in attendance on Saturday.

The event is open to the public and free of charge.
