(Red Deer) – On Friday, May 12, Aspire Special Needs Resource Centre presented the 23rd annual Evening of Decadent Dessert, our biggest annual fundraiser, at the Parkland Pavilion, Westerner Park.

The success of this event has demonstrated, year after year, what a supportive and generous community can be found in Central Alberta. The funds raised from this event help us to fulfill our mission to provide hope to children with special needs, the families who love them, and the communities who care for them.

“Evening of Decadent Dessert is a critical event for us, as it is our largest fundraising event each year,” says Michelle Moore, chair of Aspire’s Board of Directors. “This year, we raised a net of $129,000 from the event, which is an increase over 2016, and exceeds our goal of $125,000!”

At the end of the evening, draws were also made for the Aspire Children’s Raffle, another annual fundraising activity.

“The raffle raised $35,000, so Aspire raised a total of $164,000 between the two fundraisers,” says Moore. “We are thrilled by the amazing community support that has enabled us to exceed our goals this year. The funds raised from this event go to support Aspire programs, specialized equipment purchases, and fee assistance for families who are experiencing financial hardships.”

Over 530 guests enjoyed an evening of dinner, raffles, entertainment, and an exciting live auction of spectacular cakes. The evening always closes with a dessert buffet of delicious treats provided by local bakers and restaurants.

“The cakes this year were, as always, incredible! We have such talented bakers in Red Deer and surrounding area who are willing to donate their time and energy to this event,” says Moore. “Thanks to generous guests, donors, and sponsors, we were able to raise money, and tell the story of Aspire through our theme of Celebrating Exceptional Children,” says Moore. “Of course, the night wouldn’t be possible without our team of more than 70 loyal volunteers.”

Evening of Decadent Dessert also provides a chance for our guests learn more about Aspire, and celebrate the work that we do with children with special needs and their families.

“There was a supportive energy in the crowd, and the presence of past and present families, sponsors, and Aspire Staff made the night memorable,” says Michelle Sluchinski, executive director. “Our supporters demonstrated their dedication, once again, and all money raised will have a direct impact on children with special needs right here in Central Alberta.”
