ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting on O’Chiese First Nation

Alberta’s Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating an officer-involved shooting on the O’Chiese First Nation last week.

It happened around 10 p.m. March 16 when Rocky Mountain House RCMP were pursuing a vehicle reported stolen and had failed to stop for police.

After laying a spike belt across the road, one Mountie fired his gun at the vehicle.

Officers then found the suspect vehicle and later arrested a 28 year-old man believed to be the driver.

Police say the man appeared to be unhurt.

ASIRT officials say no further information will be publicly released until their ongoing investigation is complete.

ASIRT’s mandate is to effectively, independently and objectively investigate incidents involving Alberta’s police that have resulted in serious injury or death to any person. For the purposes of this mandate, this includes officer-involved shootings that would have likely resulted in serious injury or death if anyone was struck.
