A 14 year-old cross-country skier from Red Deer has been named the Alberta Sport Development Centre – Central Female Athlete of the Month for February.

Kate Hawkins is a grade 8 French Immersion student at Ecole Central Middle School and is a competitive cross-country skier with the Red Deer Nordic Ski Club.

She has been skiing since the age of four when she joined the club’s Jack Rabbit program and began her racing career two years ago.

Hawkins will be competing in Fort McMurray this weekend at the Alberta Winter Games for Zone 4 – Parkland and race again later this year in the Alberta Cup Series with Red Deer Nordic.

She has won gold medals at the Red Deer Public School Loppet for her grade for the past four years, including her most recent one this past week.

Hawkins also placed sixth in the Western Provinces with her Midget Freestyle Relay Team in the Alberta Cup Relay Race in Red Deer last month.

As part of her dryland training, Hawkins enjoys roller skiing, hiking in Jasper and climbing Coliseum Mountain near Nordegg. Additionally, she enjoys pond hockey, math, music and spends her summers participating in triathlon, fun runs and track and field.

ASDC – Central thanks Tom Bast Sports for celebrating the ASDC – Central Athlete of the Month recipients by the provision of commemorative apparel for each athlete.
