Reconstruction of Servus Arena parking lot approved

Feb 14, 2018 | 4:17 PM

The reconstruction of the parking lot at the new Servus Arena has been given the green light.

The project was approved with a few conditions at Wednesday’s meeting of the City’s Municipal Planning Commission.

Once complete, the parking lot in front of the arena and curling centre, as well as to the west by the skate park, will be re-surfaced with new asphalt. The parking area by the skate park will also be expanded.

There will also be a promenade which stretches from the arena’s front entrance to 43 Street where a raised crosswalk will take pedestrians to the gravel lot on the other side.

Where the promenade meets the road, there will be a ‘gateway’ art installation. It was proposed to be green in colour to match the logo of Servus Credit Union, but MPC decided it should instead be red.

As well, rapid flashing beacons must be installed at the crosswalk.

Additionally, there must be tree landscaping done on the island area by the skate park.

Red Deer’s Al-Terra Engineering will be putting the project to tender in the coming weeks with plans to begin construction this summer.
