Life jacket loaner stations opening soon

May 17, 2017 | 7:15 AM

EDMONTON- The Lifesaving Society Alberta and Northwest Territories will have 23 lifejacket loaner stations opening this year.

They are currently located in 16 provincial and 2 territorial parks, including Sylvan Lake and Aspen Beach Provincial Park.

There are also stations in several municipalities and private communities as well.

The loaner stations provide lifejackets for the public to borrow, at no cost, and then return after use.

Each station is supplied with public education materials and posters to raise awareness about preventing drowning and water-related injuries as well.

“Drowning stats across Canada continue to demonstrate that not wearing a lifejacket is a key risk factor associated with drowning” states Lifesaving Society Executive Director, Kelly Carter.

“Only 1 in 10 victims of boating-related fatalities were known to be wearing a lifejacket or PFD at the time of the incident.”
