City unveils new waste sorting stations at recreation facilities

New waste sorting stations are now in place at several recreation facilities across the city, and residents are encouraged to pitch in to increase the amount of waste being diverted from our landfill through recycling and composting.
Recreation facilities have converted regular one stream waste bins into four, three and two stream diversion bins to encourage residents to make an educated toss. Recreation users can now divert waste into a mixed recycling, organics, bottle recycling or regular garbage bin.
The bins, located around several city facilities, feature signage that identify what goes where. There will also be educational posters alongside the bins to provide added information to help residents know before they throw. City staff in the facilities are also available for questions if users are unsure what goes where.
“The City reviewed a number of services leading up to the 2019 Canada Winter Games and waste diversion was an area where, using the Games as a catalyst, we could implement venue improvements that would benefit the environment,” says Barb McKee, Recreation Superintendent, in a press release. “We are proud of the enhancements we’ve made as we get ready to welcome the nation, and look forward to the lasting green legacy these new waste diversion systems create for our community.”
