Barrie Wilson accessible playground fundraiser a big success!

A huge thank you goes out to the Clearview McDonald’s who presented us with a cheque for over $10,000 dollars on Monday!

Thanks to everyone who participated in our recent McHappy Day fundraiser as well. We appreciate the support for our accessible playground project.

To create equity in their school, a new $250,000 accessible playground will be built and fundraising efforts are currently underway.

The school recently received some good news as they were awarded a $20,000 grant through the Alberta Recycling Management Authority to help promote environmental sustainability.

“A big part of our playground is that we want it to be accessible for all kids and the biggest thing we can do for that is a surfacing that all kids can move around on,” said Chris Good, Principal at Barrie Wilson, adding part of the playground will be made out of recycled materials which qualified them for the grant. “We’re really excited. It’s a huge commitment from the Alberta Recycling Management Authority and we are really grateful to them for awarding us the grant.”

In addition to the grant from the Alberta Recycling Management Authority, Barrie Wilson was also the recipient of Red Deer College’s Pink In the Rink game last fall. About $12,000 was raised at that event with Scotiabank also contributing $10,000 to the project.

This year, the Ronald McDonald House of Central Alberta has chosen to support the playground at the school as a secondary cause for that fundraising event.

Donations to the playground can be made through Barrie Wilson Elementary School. Tax receipts are available for any donation of $20 or more.

The new playground has been in the works for three years and Good said they expect it to be ready sometime next year.
