Mar 6, 2019 | 3:04 PM

Forty brave souls will take on freezing waters at the Bower-Kin community center this weekend to support Special Olympics athletes.

On Saturday, March 9 members of the community are invited down to the Polar Plunge, an event to raise funds and bring awareness for the Special Olympics.

Plungers can earn incentives and qualify for provincial awards if they reach top fundraising status.

Every year, five communities from across the province host the Polar Plunge. This year Red Deer, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Calgary and Medicine Hat are taking part.

In 2018, over 500 people participated in the Polar Plunge throughout the five cities, over $223,000 was raised altogether.

The event is hosted by the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Alberta, which is an organization that promotes awareness for the Special Olympics. The group is comprised of over 85,000 law enforcement officers from across Canada.

Last year the group raised over $610,000 in Alberta alone.

Special Olympics Alberta is dedicated to enriching the lives of Albertans with intellectual disabilities through power and joy of sport. Its programs cater to all ages and a wide range of abilities to over 3,200 athletes in more than 150 communities from across the province.

The event gets underway at noon.
