World champion hockey players reunite in Red Deer at 2019 Games

Feb 27, 2019 | 10:48 AM

Players from Canada’s U18 Women’s hockey team participated in a fun game of road hockey at the 2019 Canada Winter Games Athletes’ Village at RDC on Wednesday.

All but two players from Canada’s gold medal winning team at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship in Japan last month are now representing their province at the 2019 Games in Red Deer.

Canada defeated the United States 3-2 in overtime to claim the gold medal.

Alberta’s Danielle Serdachny scored the opening goal in the final against the Americans. She also tallied and assist on the game tying goal from Anne Cherkowski.

“It was definitely something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. It was amazing getting that goal there and I was so happy we got the win,” said Serdachny, who was excited to reunite with her Canadian teammates in Red Deer.

“It was a really cool experience we’re such a close group and it’s great to be back with all them.”

Teammates have now become opponents and Serdachny describes what it’s like playing against her friends on the ice.

“Obviously, we’re playing the best players in Canada so it’s pretty tough but it’s been really fun and a really great experience so far.”

Two of the four women’s hockey quarterfinal games at the 2019 Canada Winter Games have been set.

Alberta will play Manitoba on Thursday at the Downtown Arena at 4 p.m. Ontario and Saskatchewan will Thursday at the Centrium at 7:30 p.m.

The qualifying round continues Wednesday with New Brunswick vs. P.E.I and Nova Scotia vs Northwest Territories.
