Rebels stick with Winterhawks, but fall in the third

Feb 16, 2019 | 9:03 PM

After winning on Thursday in Everett, the Red Deer Rebels have dropped consecutive games once again as they trudge through a road trip of the U.S. Division.

Red Deer lost 2-0 on Saturday night to the Portland Winterhawks in what was a scoreless game headed into the third period.

With the loss, the Rebels fall to 1-2-1-0 on the 6-game jaunt which wraps up with a game against Tri-City on Tuesday, and then in Edmonton on Friday, Jan. 22.

Former Rebel Jared Freadrich opened the scoring Saturday just 41 seconds into the final frame, the 10th of the season for the Camrose native.

It stayed that way until the Winterhawks’ Cody Glass sealed the deal with his 14th, an empty netter at 18:53. The WHL’s leading scorer Joachim Blichfeld, and Freadrich added assists.

Ethan Anders got the start for Red Deer, making 27 stops on 28 shots.

Red Deer is now 1-5-2-0 in the month of February.

With a Calgary win in Medicine Hat, the Hitmen move past the Rebels following a lengthy chase. Calgary now has 65 points to Red Deer’s 63, and both remain in possession of the two Eastern Conference wild card spots.

Brandon, the only team pursuing Red Deer and Calgary, beat the league-leading Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday, and are now within four points of Red Deer for that final spot.

Meanwhile, Edmonton (70), Lethbridge (68) and Medicine Hat (67) lead the Central Division.

Tuesday’s match-up against the Americans can be heard LIVE on 106.7 The Drive starting at 7:55 p.m. MT. Puck drop is at 8:05.
