Rebels complete major trade with Kootenay

Nov 30, 2018 | 3:44 PM

The Red Deer Rebels are jumping into the WHL trade market in a big way.

General Manager Brent Sutter pulled the trigger on a major transaction Friday afternoon with the Kootenay Ice, acquiring 19-year old forwards Brett Davis and Cameron Hausinger in exchange for 17-year old forward River Fahey, 18-year old forward Austin Schellenberg, 15-year old prospect Chase Bertholet, and 17-year old prospect Justin Svenson.

Also heading to Kootenay are a first, third and sixth round selection in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft, a second round selection in the 2020 WHL Bantam Draft and a conditional third round pick in 2022.

Davis is in his fourth season in the Western Hockey League. He is a sixth round pick of the Dallas Stars in the 2017 National Hockey League Draft, but has yet to sign with the club. The Oakbank, Manitoba native has played in 211 WHL games, scoring 55 goals and 65 assists for 120 career points.

Hausinger is also in his fourth season in the WHL and returns for a second tour of duty with the Rebels. The Anchorage, Alaska native has played in 216 WHL games, scoring 42 goals and 44 assists for 86 career points.

“They’re guys that can play in our top six, they’re veterans, and both have been in the league. They’re 19-years-old and more mature players. It’s been something kind of in the works for a bit and finally got finalized today,” Sutter said following Friday night’s 6-2 win over Calgary.

“I can put those two players in where they’re going to bring some stuff to our game that we need. They both had 20+ goal seasons last year, they’re competitors who bring a little bit of bite to our front end, and as the season goes on, it doesn’t get easier.

Sutter added that both are guys who have a high probability of returning to the team as 20-year-olds next year.

Fahey, who heads to Kootenay, is in his first full season in the WHL. The Campbell River, BC native was selected in the fourth round (74th overall) in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft by the Rebels and has registered one assist in 21 games this season.

Schellenberg, from Grande Prairie, is in his second full season in the WHL and has one goal and five assists in 19 games.

Svenson was selected in the third round (48th overall) in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft by the Rebels. Svenson is from Ile Des Chenes, Manitoba. He has six goals and five assists for 11 points in 15 games with the Swan Valley Stampeders of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. Svenson has also played in 19 WHL games with the Rebels.

Bertholet was selected in the fifth round (94th overall) in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft by the Rebels. From Thompson, Manitoba, Bertholet has five goals and 11 assists for 16 points in 21 games with the Prince Albert Mintos of the Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League. During the 2017-18 season, Bertholet scored 30 goals and added 38 assists for 68 points in 36 games with the Norman Wolves in the Winnipeg Bantam 1 AAA Hockey League.
