Man sentenced for child porn, child sex offences

A local man will spend about 11 years behind bars for child porn and child sexual assault offences.

Stuart Peter Hunt, 55, pleaded guilty in October to making, accessing and distributing child pornography as well as sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and sexual assault.

Hunt was arrested at his Red Deer home in January 2017 with police seizing 26 items including cell phones, computers and a 264-page book described as a “handbook for like-minded predators to exploit children.” A hidden camera was also discovered in Hunt’s home.

Hunt possessed a child porn collection featuring thousands of images and videos of boys as young as toddlers. He later admitted to police he’d engaged in actual hands-on sexual contact with four young boys between 1996 and 2005 while he was living in Oyen.

Monday afternoon in Red Deer provincial court, Judge James Glass sentenced Hunt to a total of 16.5 years in prison. With concurrent sentences and credit for pre-trial custody taken into account, Hunt will be behind bars for just over 11 years (4056 days).

Glass cited a psychiatric assessment which concluded Hunt meets the criteria for a pedophilia diagnosis, suffers from cannabis use disorder, shows prominent traits of avoidant personality disorder, and is a high risk to reoffend.

Glass noted Hunt’s confessions to police and early guilty pleas as mitigating factors.
