Hagel’s four-goal effort lifts Rebels past Oil Kings

Oct 20, 2018 | 8:19 AM

EDMONTON – It was sweet redemption for the Red Deer Rebels Friday night as they beat the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-2 and halted a two-game skid in the process.

The Rebels lost their first two games of the season to Edmonton before rattling off five straight wins.

Alex Morozoff got the scoring started early for Red Deer, notching his 1st of the seasons just 29 seconds into the game.

Brandon Hagel scored 39 seconds later, his 5th, and Red Deer was running away with it before the Oil Kings knew what hit them.

But Edmonton fought back and at the 7:27 mark, Jake Neighbours got his 2nd while on the powerplay to make it 2-1.

In the second period, Brandon Hagel got his second of the night and 6th of the season to reclaim the two-goal lead just 76 seconds in.

At 7:15 of the middle frame, Rebel-killer Trey Fix-Wolansky made Red Deer pay on the powerplay again, scoring his 7th of the year.

But in the third, the Rebels would ice it, Brandon Hagel scoring not once, but twice more to give him a four-goal night. His outburst gives him eight on the season, fifth most among all WHL players. He also has 19 points, sixth most in the WHL.

Ethan Anders stopped 41 shots in the Friday night victory at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

The final shots were 43-25 Oil Kings. Edmonton was 2/5 on the PP, while Red Deer went 0/2.

Red Deer, now 6-3-1-0, sits atop the Central Division with two games in hand on second place Medicine Hat.

The Rebels are right back at it Saturday night (Oct. 20) against divisonal rival Kootenay Ice (3-4-1-1) at the Enmax Centrium in Red Deer. Puck drop is at 7. The broadcast can be heard LIVE on 106.7 The Drive beginning at 6:30.
