The Tools for School Program was a success again this year.

The program, put on by Women’s Outreach in partnership with the United Way of Central Alberta, gave out a total of 1,500 backpacks for the back to school season.

“We didn’t need to turn kids away, the ones we had to say come back, they came back,” said Women’s Outreach Fund Development Officer Darcy Oullette. “Nobody didn’t get a backpack that needed one.”

Towards the end of August, Tools for School was in urgent need of more backpacks. The response to that need was quick.

“I love central Alberta, when people here that there is a need, people really tend to rally around it, So when it came out that we really short, we did get an influx,” said Oullette.

Backpack stock did fluctuate quite regularly, but Oullette says that that’s just the nature of a program that is heavily reliant on both donation and volunteers. Oullette also said that the response is always uplifting.

“People always step up when they here that these kids are in need. And no one wants to see a child start the school year without the tools that they need to start it.”
