Sorensen Station transforming into energy generator

Aug 5, 2018 | 8:00 AM

Solar panels will soon be installed on the roof of Red Deer’s downtown parkade – Sorensen Station.

Officials say the project will result in a new energy source for the City of Red Deer and will see the current ‘living roof’ installed on the barrel roof when the building first opened in 2010, replaced.

The project’s cost is pegged at $548,758 and was approved by city council during 2018 capital budget debates late last year.

“Energy collected by the new solar panels will provide power to the parkade, and any excess energy will flow back into The City’s electrical grid,” says Erin Stuart, Inspections and Licensing Manager, in a press release. “The panels will also divert unwanted solar heat from the building, which helps us maintain cooler temperatures inside.”
