Team Alberta releases male hockey shortlist for 2019 Games

Jul 16, 2018 | 4:16 PM

Two local players have a shot at suiting up for Team Alberta’s male hockey squad at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

Goalie Drew Sim of Tees and defenceman Charlie Wright of Olds have made the shortlist roster for the U16 team that will compete at the Games. The shortlist includes five goaltenders, 10 defencemen, and 20 forwards.

Sim, 15, played last season with OHA Edmonton Bantam Prep, posting a 2.05 goals against average and .916 save-percentage. He was selected in round three of the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft by the Vancouver Giants.

Wright, 14, patrolled the blue line last season for the Red Deer Rebels Bantam AAA squad. He posted 19 points in 36 regular season games and was selected by the Saskatoon Blades in round four of the WHL Bantam Draft.

Players were selected to the shortlist based on their overall play throughout the Team Alberta scouting process, past Team Alberta programs, and at the U16 Summer Camp in Camrose, July 3-8. Eighty players were invited to Camrose, and worked through high intensity on-ice sessions, as well as off-ice training and classroom sessions.

The shortlisted players will be scouted with their club teams in the fall, prior to final decisions on the 20 players selected to the Team Alberta roster. The 2019 Canada Winter Games run February 15 – March 3 in Red Deer.
