A Red Deer man is accused in connection an armed robbery in Alix and a break and enter and stolen vehicle incident in Stettler last November.

Matthew Duda, 30, is charged with robbery, assault with a weapon and possession of property obtained by crime in regards to a November 26, 2017 armed robbery at the Gas Plus in Alix. Mounties say the suspect vehicle was abandoned in Stettler, while the suspect was later identified, charged and arrested on May 10 by Innisfail RCMP following reports of a suspicious man in Penhold.

On November 27, Stettler RCMP responded to two different complaints of stolen vehicles. In one case, the vehicle was immediately recovered as the suspect was unable to get very far. In the second case, efforts made to steal the vehicle were unsuccessful but the vehicle suffered severe damage.

Two days later on November 29, Stettler RCMP were advised of a break and enter and theft from a residence which had occurred over recent days.

After collaborating with Bashaw RCMP and the Forensic Identification Section, it was determined the incidents were related to each other, including the Alix armed robbery.

Duda’s charges in relation to the Stettler incidents include theft of a motor vehicle, mischief under $5,000, mischief over $5,000, break and enter and stealing a firearm and break and enter to commit theft.

Duda now remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing, with RCMP expected to provide an update once that takes place.

In 2016, Duda was to go to trial after being accused of firing a gun in a 2015 road rage incident in the Corral Foods parking lot on 59 Avenue in Red Deer. Those charges were eventually dropped.
