Red Deer River Naturalists inviting you to take part in May Species Count

May 7, 2018 | 5:22 PM

An organization that works to conserve natural areas and species native to central Alberta is offering you the chance to take part in a Species Count this month.

Officials with the Red Deer River Naturalists say their May Species Count will take place on May 26 and 27 and involve birds, flowers, mammals and insects. You do not need to be a member to participate.

The May Species Count is said to be a census of all living organisms and individual animal numbers are to be tallied during the course of the count. If those participating spot a rare bird or something that shouldn’t be in this area for example, as much relevant information is to be noted as possible such as what it was doing, when it was doing it, how good of a look you were able to get and if any photos were obtained.

When counting flowers in bloom, only the name of the species is needed. If you see a rarity, a photograph will be required and any odd situations should also be noted.
