The man accused in a 2016 murder in Red Deer has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge ahead of his scheduled trial.

Shane Dion McPhee was given a six-year prison sentence in Red Deer court on Monday.

Now 42, Dion was charged with Second Degree Murder and slated to go to trial from March 23 to April 6.

His ‘voir dire,’ or a trial within a trial, was set to run today (Monday) through Wednesday with jury selection on Thursday.

On Feb. 19, 2016, McPhee was arrested and charged after the victim, 47-year-old William Blaine Baker, was dropped off at Red Deer Regional Hospital the night of Feb. 13. It was later determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office that Baker’s death was a homicide.

Baker had been stabbed in the neck before being driven to Red Deer Regional and left there before passing away.

On Monday, McPhee pleaded guilty to manslaughter. The judge subsequently sentenced him to six years in jail. With credit for time served, he has about three years left to serve.

McPhee was also given a lifetime firearms prohibition.
