Red Deer Mounties seize guns, fake cash in Johnstone Crossing arrest

Oct 31, 2017 | 11:53 AM

Red Deer Mounties have seized a variety of items following an arrest earlier this month of a 25-year-old Red Deer man.

Around 6:30 p.m. on October 19, RCMP located a stolen white Honda Civic at an apartment in the Johnstone Crossing area. RCMP arrested the driver, but not before he tried to evade police and struck a parked, unoccupied vehicle.

At the same time, members pursued a man and a woman into the apartment building after they were seen fleeing the suspect vehicle. RCMP did not locate them, but did seize a shotgun abandoned in the stairwell.

Police then seized two more shotguns from the Civic, one of which was loaded. Police also found 37 counterfeit Canadian $100 bills and 12 fake $20 bills from the stolen car. The bills look like new polymer notes, but are made with paper, and feature Chinese characters on them. RCMP say this is the first seizure of counterfeit bills with Chinese symbols on them. The 100s have white characters and 20s have pink characters.

The driver of the stolen car faces numerous charges, which are yet to be sworn before the courts, therefore his name cannot yet be released.

The Honda Civic was reported stolen out of Red Deer on September 24 and is believed to have been involved in several criminal offences in central Alberta since then, including four gas and dash files, two instances of evading police, a shoplifting incident and dangerous driving.

Police continue to investigate.
