Red Deer city council supports move to multi-year budgeting
Red Deer city council approved a motion to support a move to multi-year budgeting on Tuesday.
At the regular council meeting, they passed a motion directing administration to develop a process for approving several years of operating and capital budgets at once, with annual reviews and opportunities to make changes.
The motion was passed by a 7-1 vote with Mayor Cindy Jefferies and councillors Kraymer Barnstable, Bruce Buruma, Cassandra Curtis, Adam Goodwin, Chad Krahn, and Jaelene Tweedle in favour. Councillor Dianne Wyntjes was opposed, and Councillor Tristin Brisbois was absent.
“A budget is a plan based on the best information we have at the time. Multi-year budgeting gives us greater predictability and stability so we can plan ahead, while still reviewing and adjusting each year as circumstances change,” said Mayor Cindy Jefferies in a media release. “It also creates more opportunities to hear from residents and explain the choices ahead and how those decisions affect services and affordability.”
