Catholic Education Week set for Oct. 17-23

Oct 15, 2026 | 1:05 PM

Beginning this Saturday, Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools will celebrate Catholic Education Week from Oct. 17-23.

This years theme is is: “The Power of the Holy Spirit”, inspired by Romans 15:13: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Staff and students are encouraged to wear blue throughout the week, recognizing publicly-funded Catholic schools in Alberta and across Canada, honouring their invaluable contribution to education and faith formation.

“We are blessed to have publicly funded Catholic schools where every student is valued, recognized for their unique gifts, and encouraged to reach their full potential. During Catholic Education Week, RDCRS students will participate in a common liturgy connected to our division faith theme, Anchored in Faith: Uplifted by Hope, reflecting on their God-given purpose, the knowledge that they are deeply loved by God, and the hope for their future,” said Jo-Ann Kelly, Religious Education and Curriculum Support Lead Teacher.

“In Alberta, we hold a rare and sacred gift: the right to a publicly funded Catholic education,” said Dr. Rhonda Nixon. “Across Alberta, there are 23 Catholic school divisions—a vast family of faith serving nearly 200,000 students. We are one of only three provinces that still protect this choice, which exists because of the dedicated support of parents, students, and staff  who believe in our mission in Red Deer Catholic Schools- To support inclusive, Christ-centered communities that foster care and compassion for students, families, and staff.”

This year, Sunday, October 18, is Catholic Education Sunday, where Catholics come together to celebrate the gift of Catholic education in their parishes.

“Catholic Education Week is a wonderful opportunity for our school community to come together in faith, celebrate our publicly-funded Catholic education system, and reflect on the profound impact of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives,” said Board Chair Chris Andrew. “We invite everyone in our parishes and communities to join us in prayer and celebration as we abound in hope this October.”
