Proposed 2027 Capital Budget released for public review

According to the city, the proposed 2027 Capital Budget includes approximately $80.2 million in investments across tax-supported infrastructure, fleet assets and land development activities.

Approximately 76 per cent of planned capital expenditures are said to be directed toward Infrastructure Preservation projects, reflecting the City’s continued focus on maintaining and renewing existing infrastructure. The city says these investments help ensure roads, facilities, parks, stormwater systems and other critical assets continue to support safe, reliable and effective service delivery.

Officials say projects included in the proposed budget have been prioritized based on factors such as infrastructure condition, risk, service impacts, growth requirements and available funding. The city notes, the Capital Budget is informed by asset management practices, long-term planning studies and operational needs identified across the organization.

“The City continues to face increasing pressure from aging infrastructure, rising construction costs and funding sources that have not kept pace with growing capital needs,” said Sam Mugford, Chief Financial Officer. “The proposed Capital Budget reflects the need to balance affordability with long-term infrastructure sustainability while making strategic choices about how available funding is invested.”

Questions and comments received by the deadline will be included in council’s Oct. 13 budget debate agenda package for council’s consideration.
