RDES responds to house fire in West Park

Red Deer fire crews attended a significant house fire in the city’s West Park area Thursday night.

It was around 7:30 when firefighters responded to the residence on Wigmore Close.

Four adults who were in the single-family detached home called 911 and evacuated. One was taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The investigation has determined the fire began with a lithium-ion battery for an e-bike that combusted.

Deputy Chief Matt White says people need to ensure they are only charging lithium-ion batteries with the equipment provided, and ensure they are not altered in any way.

White also noted the fire was contained to the main floor of the one-storey home, which also has a basement. The smoke damage is extensive, and the home is not liveable at the moment. The family was able to make alternate arrangements.

White also shared that there was a fire that crews responded to at Amethyst House Friday morning.

Just after 7 a.m., a fire broke out in a unit on the second floor.

Amethyst House, across from the downtown Tim Hortons, was vacated by residents earlier this summer when it was closed by CMHA.

Fire crews found no one in the building and have not yet determined a cause.
