Central Sport’s Xplore Sport Day set for September 12

“It’s been great. [The event] has been building every year with more and more new groups becoming part of it,” he said.

That day, local sports organizations from all over the region come together to showcase their programs. They host try-it stations throughout the Collicutt Centre, allowing people to try a sport they’ve never considered before.

The participants learn basic skills and get opportunities to ask questions about the sport.

So far, Central Sport has 24 sports organizations attending, including Central Alberta Handball, Game Day Adventures-Bunnock, Red Deer Fish and Game Junior Shooters, and the Old School Hockey Association, to name a few.

Thomas explained that each year approximately 800-1,000 people and 25-30 sports organizations come to the event. What’s really grown is the number of groups that provide the opportunities to try the sport.

He added that many organizations that do attend the day end up recruiting more players or, at the very least, people who are interested in joining.

“That’s probably the biggest advantage of this is just the exposure they get and more people wanting to join,” Thomas said.

It’s open to all ages, whether you’re five years old or 85 years old, as they’ll have both youth and adult sports on hand.

Central Sport will also have a booth set up for those interested in future volunteer opportunities. Thomas explained they’ve had volunteers sign up for 55 different sporting events this year. There’s plenty of great events coming up, including the IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Red Deer.

“Come on down and have some fun,” Thomas added.
