Proposed cannabis store near St. Joseph High School sparks community concerns
Red Deer residents and a representative from Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools have voiced their opposition to a proposal for a cannabis retail store that could open across the street from St. Joseph High School.
The cannabis store, if approved by Red Deer city council, would be allowed to operate at 2120-90 Thorburn Avenue, which would be located next to other stores on the south side of 67 Street from the school located on the north side of the road.
A referral letter seeking feedback on the proposed amendments was sent to eight landowners located within 100 metres of the site at the end of May.
According to council documents, one citizen expressed concerns, saying having a store in the neighbourhood “will attract all sorts of people to the community, thereby exposing the kids to these vices too early in life.”
