Plenty of sunshine appears to be in the forecast for the eighth annual Battle at the Beach in Sylvan Lake this weekend.

On June 13-14, 116 teams with over 800 participants will take part in the ball hockey tournament that will feature divisions from the U7 all the way up to the adult level.

The action begins at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and will run all day until 6 p.m. before returning on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Former NHLer Colin Fraser, who came up with the idea of the tournament eight years ago, said this will be their second biggest year. In 2025, they had 125 teams register.

“I think it’s just that people really enjoyed the event, so they always want to come back, and on top of that, they tell their friends how much fun they had,” Fraser said. “I think we could make it even bigger if it weren’t for other sports going on. I know some kids would like to play, but they’re just busy doing other things.”

Registration has already passed, but members of the public are welcome to come view the action along Lakeshore Drive.

They actually close down a portion of the street in Sylvan Lake between 44 and 45 Street, and will also take up the Lakeshore parking lot. Fraser said a total of 13 rinks will be set up.

“We are super excited. The best part about it is the kids and how excited they are to play. They really do genuinely love it, they have a great experience, and that’s what it’s all about for me,” he added.

“If you’re bored or want to stop by, it’s still fun to check out. I think we get a lot of people who come check it out anyway and see what it’s all about.”
