Historic Markerville to celebrate Icelandic Independence Day

Jun 8, 2026 | 2:25 PM

Markerville will celebrate Icelandic Independence Day this June 13.

The free festivities kick off at noon at the Creamery Courtyard.

“Our Icelandic Day picnic recognizes Iceland’s independence from Denmark on June 17, 1944. A variety of activities are staged to celebrate and showcase Icelandic culture in Markerville to honour the pioneers that settled in this area,” shares Byron Nilsson, spokesperson for Historic Markerville.

“In addition, we crown the new Fjallkona (Maid of the Mountain), who represents Iceland in activities throughout the year. Folks come from far and wide to engage in the activities and celebrate with us.”
