The Red Deer Rebels announced Marc Habscheid has resigned as head coach of the club.

He served in the role in Red Deer for just one season and explained he wants to return to his home in Europe.

“After living back in Canada this last year, I realize that my heart lays in Europe where I’ve lived in my home for the past four years,” Habscheid said in a media release. “I am thankful for the opportunity to coach the Rebels and wish nothing but success to Brent and the entire organization.”

Habscheid helped the Rebels achieve a 26-36-4-2 record this past season en route to a return to the WHL postseason.

Rebels Owner, President, and General Manager Brent Sutter thanked Habscheid for all of his hard work this past season and wished him well moving forward.

He also said the search for a new head coach begins immediately. Whoever the Rebels hire will be the team’s fifth head coach in four years.

“We are excited to build on the success we saw in the second half of the season,” Sutter said. “Our next coach will have a talented roster to work with as we continue toward our goal of bringing a championship back to Red Deer.”
