Appetite for Instruction

Youth rock band fundraiser just a few weeks away

May 30, 2026 | 7:00 AM

The second rendition of a youth rock band fundraiser called Appetite for Instruction is set for June 16.

Presented by Red Deer Public Schools and Guitarz For Kidz, the fundraiser will be held at Bo’s Bar and Grill, where youth will play a series of performances beginning at 6 p.m.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and tickets can be purchased at the door or online for $20.

Dan Barton, community liaison of the Red Deer Public Schools rock band program, said the kids are very excited.

“We would love to absolutely pack the place this year,” he said. “The kids have worked really hard, and they’re so excited to get up on stage and perform.”

Those in attendance will be able to enjoy not only a series of different sets performed by the children, but also bid on silent auction and live auction items.

Barton and two other instructors help instruct multiple rock band programs, including at East View Middle School, where five or six bands have been formed. He added that their program has grown significantly.

They’re also in the process of finishing up a two-year pilot program called Rock Band North, which is three schools paired together from Normandeau, Glendale, and G.H. Dawe. The junior high students meet once a week to learn music.

There is also a city-wide after-school band program for any kid to utilize from Grades 6 to 12. Barton said it’s minimal fees to be a part of it, and if you can’t afford it, some sponsorships will cover costs.

He said last year, the community showed up to support the kids, where they raised $6,000. This year, they hope to raise $10,000.

“We are just looking to have community support there and really see the community come out and sell out that room,” he said.

The fundraiser is meant to support the operations of the rock band programs, including paying for studio time, green screen spaces, sound checks, and more. He said there are some cases where they need to purchase professional gear for the kids and address wear and tear on some of the instruments.

If you can’t make the event but would like to help out, you can get in touch with the program through Red Deer Public Schools.

“Come and see what these kids have been working so hard on. They’ve been practicing so hard, and they’re a little terrified because they realize what Bo’s is to Red Deer and how many amazing bands have played that stage. It’s an awesome opportunity for them.”
