RDES encourages extra caution amidst dry conditions

Red Deer Emergency Services is reminding citizens to be extra careful due to dry conditions in the region.

In a media release, the city says the current fire risk is considered extreme in the surrounding areas. 

The dry conditions are a result of high temperatures and limited precipitation, where fires can easily start and spread. This has resulted in multiple recent brush fires.

RDES has included the following tips to help prevent fires: 

  • Never throw out cigarettes into easily combustible materials, such as vegetation, potted plants or landscaping, peat moss, dried grass mulch, leaves, or similar items, as they can easily catch fire. 
  • Place smoking materials in deep, sturdy ashtrays, 
  • Never toss smoking materials on the ground, in a garbage, or in a dry, grassy area, as they can smoulder undetected for days before igniting a fire. 
  • Ensure fire pits are properly monitored and fully extinguished.
