Chinook’s Edge School Division student Logan Swanson has won a gold medal at the Provincial Skills Canada Competition in Edmonton.

As a result, he is now eligible to compete at nationals in Toronto.

The 18-year-old is currently in high school in Didsbury and is a pre-employment welding student at Olds College of Agriculture & Technology.

He began his journey in the skilled trades after he participated in Central Alberta Collegiate Institute (CACI) programming through his high school.

During that time, he completed the Readiness for the Skilled Trades Level 1 and Level 2 programs, and last year, competed at the Regional Skills Canada Competition and earned a silver medal.

This year, Swanson moved on to provincials after advancing through the Central Regional competition with a gold medal. At provincials, he captured gold in welding.

“Logan’s achievement highlights the strength of career education pathways within Chinook’s Edge and the value of partnerships like CACI. When we can take the seed of interest in a trade and help it grow into the kind of experience that can blossom into a rewarding career, that’s concrete evidence that a program is working,” said Dr. Ryan Sawula, Chinook’s Edge School Division Superintendent. “You can see the value of hands-on experiential learning opportunities that prepare students for future careers in the skilled trades.”

CACI is a partnership between Chinook’s Edge School Division, Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, Red Deer Public Schools, Wolf Creek School Division, CAREERS, Red Deer Polytechnic, and Olds College.

Its purpose is to provide career-related opportunities for students through trades-related programs.

“Chinook’s Edge is incredibly proud of Logan and all he has accomplished,” said Brianne Fletcher, Director of the Community Learning Campus and Dual Credit Programming for Chinook’s Edge School Division. “Our partnerships through the Central Alberta Collegiate Institute, CAREERS, our CTS teachers, along with the support, coaching, and guidance from parents and mentors, play a huge role in the success of students like Logan. It truly takes a community working together to support these opportunities.”
