Central Alberta First, RDP launch new Artificial Intelligence workshop series

Apr 17, 2026 | 5:23 PM

Central Alberta First and Red Deer Polytechnic announced they’re launching a new Artificial Intelligence workshop series.

It was created in collaboration with the Regional Business Support Network to help local businesses across the region learn how to properly use AI.

“This initiative is a strong example of what regional collaboration can achieve,” said Sandra Blyth, Economic Development Manager Invest Olds and Chairperson, Central Alberta First. “By working together with Red Deer Polytechnic and our regional partners, we are ensuring that businesses across Central Alberta have access to the tools, knowledge, and support they need to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving economy.”

The initiative, officials say, builds on the Central Alberta AI Conference that was held last October. During the conference, businesses from across central Albert came together and formed 167 participant evaluations.

They also gathered feedback from a regional business survey by BREWD that surveyed 700 businesses.

That feedback identified a need for hands-on AI training.

“Businesses told us they don’t need more hype around AI—they need practical guidance on how to use it in their day-to-day operations,” said Michelle McFadden, Small Business Development Advisor with the Regional Business Support Network. “This workshop series is a direct response to that feedback.”

The first session of the series, AI for Small Business: What It Is, What It Isn’t, and How to Use It Today.”

The session is a half-day, live online workshop that focuses on real-world applications of AI in areas such as communication, research, workflow efficiency, and decision-making.

As a result, participants will gain:

  • A clear understanding of what AI can and cannot do in a business context
  • Practical tools and approaches that can be applied immediately
  • Confidence to evaluate and use AI tools responsibly

The workshop is the first in a five-part learning pathway created by experts in Red Deer Polytechnic’s Continuing Education and Corporate Training division.

“This collaboration reflects a strong regional commitment to supporting business innovation and competitiveness,” said Lisa Henderson, Interim Dean, Donald School of Business at Red Deer Polytechnic. “By combining applied expertise with real business needs, we are helping organizations adopt AI in a way that is practical, responsible and impactful.”

The program is delivered entirely online to ensure businesses across Central Alberta can take part.

Registration is now open for two upcoming sessions set for May and June. Businesses will be able to choose a date that fits their schedule.
