Red Deer County council passes first reading of 2026 tax rates

Apr 14, 2026 | 4:56 PM

Red Deer County council is proposing a zero per cent tax increase for residential and non-residential properties.

Council passed first reading of the tax rate bylaw on Tuesday, but it also comes with a 15 per cent proposed increase to the mill rate for farmland.

The County notes in a release that the tax rate as a while would allow it to collect $58.1 million in taxation to achieve its budgeted work plans for 2026.

As it relates to farmland, the County notes that farmland is assessed based on prescribed rates from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, set in 1991. The average cropped quarter section would see an annual increase of $82.90.

“Council is committed to setting a tax rate bylaw that is responsible and mindful of affordability for residents and businesses,” said Mayor Brent Ramsay in a release.

“We understand property owners are already facing rising costs, and we recognize the added impact of provincial increases to Education Funding and the Provincial Police Funding Model; strong growth in Red Deer County is helping to reduce the need for costly mill rate increases. The increase to the farmland mill rate will keep pace with inflation and support the cost of Agricultural Services.”

The County also explains that the provincial government requires municipalities to levy Education Property Taxes on their behalf based on the County’s assessment values. The overall requisition for education has increased by $2.54 million or 11.52 per cent to $24,571,393.

The seniors housing requisition from Parkland Seniors Housing Foundation has marginally decreased by $784 to $219,016. The provincial police funding request has been increased by $292,215 or 17.27 per cent to $1,984,532.

The public has until April 24 to provide feedback on the proposed 2026 tax rates at feedback@rdcounty.ca or by calling 403-350-2150.

Taxes are due by June 30, unless you are enrolled in the County’s monthly payment plan program, the signup deadline for which is April 20.
