Trial date set for Red Deer man charged in downtown assaults

Apr 10, 2026 | 3:01 PM

A trial date has been set for a man accused in a downtown altercation involving a weapon last month.

Velizar Zonjic, 61, of Red Deer, is scheduled for trial in Red Deer Court of Justice on Nov. 23, 2026.

He’s facing two counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, four counts of assault with a weapon, and one count of resisting or obstructing a peace officer following an alleged incident on March 2, 2026.

Police say on that day at 11:42 p.m., the RCMP responded to a 911 call that a man had attacked several people with weapons near 50 Street and 50 Avenue.

Witnesses told police the man had allegedly struck three people on their heads and back with a cane. The suspect had also allegedly threatened another person with a knife before leaving the area on foot. The victims, police say, sustained minor injuries and declined medical assistance.

Police found the man, who then waved the knife towards the officers before being taken into custody.

RCMP say Zonjic was held for a Judicial Interim Release Hearing and was remanded into custody.
